For 30 years, Matthew’s purpose has remained consistent: providing expert legal advice to those who need it most.

Since Matthew first began his work as a criminal defense attorney, he has not taken a sabbatical or considered a career change. From early on, he was guided by the encouragement and wisdom of his father Harry J. Schmitt Jr., a prosecutor himself. Those mentored insights have proven invaluable to Matthew in many circumstances. Over the course of 30 years, he has been involved in thousands of arraignments, bail hearings, and pretrial hearings. He has defended hundreds of clients charged with the following:

  • Assault with Intent to Murder
  • Assault with intent to Kill
  • Assault & Battery Causing Serious Bodily Injury
  • Rape
  • Narcotics trafficking

He works mainly in Plymouth and Barnstable Counties, but have made appearances across the state of Massachusetts. Present in Falmouth District Court since the day it opened its doors, you’ll find him there on average three days a week.

Matthew is fortunate to be blessed with a wonderful family. Two of his children attended Mass Maritime Academy, and the other is a USMA West Point Graduate. He and his wife enjoy competitive sailing in their free time and have raced in several regattas. That drive to win is the same energy that he takes to every case.
