Police Encounter

Maintaining a calm and composed interaction with the police is your utmost concern. Refrain from strong language as it may provoke hostility. Clearly state your constitutional right to an attorney and invoke your right to remain silent until an attorney is present.

First Contact

Remain patient as you wait for your lawyer. The police are allowed to keep you in custody for 24 hours, and it is likely that you will be pressured into a confession. Say nothing until your lawyer arrives.

Planning a Defense

Your lawyer is your strongest and often only advocate when you are in front of the prosecution, judge, and jury. Be completely transparent and honest with the information you provide; lies will only weaken your case.
